Description
Medusa/Greek mythology, one of three sisters Gorgons such a ferocious appearance that whoever looked on her was turned into stone. She had wide eyes, fangs for teeth, her tongue was always protruding out, and instead of hair she was twisting like a snake. Even after Medusa was beheaded by Perseus, her head retained the ability to turn to stone.
According to myth, Athena, the patron of Perseus placed the Gorgon’s head on her aegis. In later art the head is a characteristic feature of the shield of Athena.
